Wednesday June 5
Woke up early to do Table Mountain hike (8 km return).
Quite hot but not oppressive, so we took lots of water and set out. I had two
concerns, staying hydrated and watching out for snakes! We saw our first snake
just before the trailhead on one of the park roads, a small diamondback
rattler, dead though, someone must have run it over with a vehicle. We didn’t
approach it for a closer look in case it was faking!
The hike was nice, fairly gradual climb with an elevation
gain of 600 feet. The views were superb with the City of Rocks laying at our
feet. After an enjoyable stay at the summit, we descended back to camp where we
enjoyed an outdoor shower using the Altos exterior shower feature – divine!
Note: there are no shower facilities at this campsite.
All clean and refreshed, we headed to Silver City for a
12:30 yoga class. Arrived a bit early but the studio was open so we went in
hoping to sign in for the class. Once inside we were confused as there was a
class in progress... a few minutes later the instructor emerged from the studio
to see who was hanging around in the lobby. We explained we were there for the
12:30 class then realized we were late and that the class had started at 11:30!
We did it again! Long story short, there was another class at 5:30 so we
decided to tour Silver City and come back for the late afternoon class.
Silver City is a small town, very authentic with a
distinctive small-town vibe. The city was originally a mining community and
there is a huge copper mine still active in the area but the town has a very
artsy feel with lots of galleries and shops reflecting that lifestyle. We spent
a couple of hours at a very funky coffee shop where we enjoyed excellent
beverages and treats as well as good Wi-Fi. We both got caught up with our
computer work as the City of Rocks did not have cell phone service.
After coffee, we still had some time on our hands so we
stopped at Walmart to pickup some RV black and grey water chemicals and drove
through a small town just north of Silver City that has an establishment called
the Buckhorn Saloon and Opera House that is really old and hosts evenings of
entertainment – unfortunately we weren’t able to attend any.
