Tuesday June 11
Back in the saddle and headed north. Before leaving Taos,
we stopped for one last coffee and did our grocery shopping at Albertsons as we
weren’t sure what shopping opportunities awaited us near Lathrop State Park,
our first stop in Colorado.
The drive north was scenic as we paralleled the Sangre de
Cristo Mountains. We cruised along listening to an audiobook which always makes
the time fly by. After we crossed the Colorado state line, the mountains took
it up a notch with lots of snowy peaks in every direction. In southern
Colorado, the mountains are spaced out somewhat, with wide open green valleys dotted
with beautiful ranches. If I was fixing to get myself a ranch, this here place
would be one I would consider.
We arrived at Lathrop State Park mid afternoon, checked in,
purchased our Colorado State Park annual pass (as we are staying in three state
parks here), filled our fresh water tank and went and set up at our site.
After setup we donned our running shoes and ran on the
parks pristine trail around one of the two lakes within the park. A very nice
and flat 5 km loop. Lathrop SP was the first state park in Colorado, setup in
the early 1960s. With two lakes, one for boating and fishing and the other for
non-motorized sports, has something for everyone. The lakes are small so
boating with a large runabout would get boring pretty quickly. We saw lots of
paddleboards and kayaks. There is also a 9 hole golf course beside the park
which is owned by the nearby town of Walsenburg.
