Thursday May 30

Travel day to our first stop in New Mexico, Oliver Lee Memorial State campground near Alamogordo and White Sands National Park. The campground is nestled up against the foot of the Sangre del Cristo mountains just east of White Sands National Park. When we arrived it was blazing hot, we checked in and made our way to our site. The ground at the site was too hard to drive in pegs so we couldn’t put up our sunshade…darn. We setup, got the A/C going and hoped for the best. After dinner, we took a short walk through the desert, being especially careful to watch for rattlesnakes which are plentiful in the area. After sunset, we breathed a sigh of relief as the temperatures dropped and the evening desert coolness descended off the mountains.
