Monday June 3rd

Driving day to City of Rocks SP south of the Gila Wilderness. Made a pit stop in Las Cruces for coffee, gas and groceries. It is an interesting looking city just west of White Sands Missile Range.

Arrived at City of Rocks mid afternoon. The park is small, only 3 or 4 square miles smack in the middle of the Chihuahuan desert. The unique feature of the park are the hundreds of wildly shaped volcanic rock outcrops that make up the “city”. A lot of work has been done to embed campsites among the huge rocks making private, otherworldly campsites. We were located in the RV section which has water and electricity, so not situated at one at one of the funky sites. The only drawback with the non-RV sites is they have no services. We would have been fine with that as we have solar power and enough water storage for a number of days, but we stuck with our serviced site.

After dinner we explored the rocky interior of the “city”, scrambling over rocks and searching for photo ops, so cool.
