Homeward Bound, Friday June 28 - Saturday June 29 2024

 Friday June 28th

The penultimate day on this voyage, got out by 8:30 – not too bad for us! A bit overcast with some rain in the forecast. We thought we would stop to view one of Thomas Dambo’s troll sculptures along our route. We enjoyed visiting “Rita the Rock Planter” outside of Cripple Creek Colorado and became aware of Thomas Dambo’s work and his amazing, somewhat prolific quest to build interesting trolls all over the world. Alas, as we made our way towards the Canadian border, the rain began falling so we decided to forgo our visit to “Benny the Beard Fisher”, the Michigan troll – but we’ll be back this way I’m sure.

With our audiobook spooling away it didn’t take long before we reached the Canadian border and Sault Ste Marie. We cleared customs and were on our way to Chutes PP, still 2.5 hours down the road towards Sudbury. We did make a pit stop for coffee and gas before heading east from the Soo.

Chutes was just as we remembered it from our previous visit last fall – but much busier this time due to the Canada Day long weekend. After cueing up to fill Free-da’s water tank, we found our campsite and setup. Luckily the rain held off, but the mosquitos didn’t… but they weren’t so bad. Went for a walk after dinner down by the river to look at the falls. It is a picturesque area with some nice trails… but we wouldn’t be enjoying them this time around, as we were heading home first thing tomorrow morning.

Saturday June 29th

Homewards bound – although still 6.5 hours away. We listened to our audiobook and watched the scenery fly by. Made a few pit stops along the way and before you know it, we were cresting the hill in Kanata with the Ottawa Skyline filling the windshield. It seemed somewhat surreal rolling into Ottawa after 10.5 weeks away. It felt even stranger turning onto Harrold Place and seeing home come into view. Everything looked as we had left it, but much greener. And then, the unpacking began!
