Wednesday May 15th

Woke up early, Lydia tried to run on the beach and was swarmed with mosquitos. Had breakfast and broke camp.

Headed west along the coast to Freeport, then north-west to Austin. Stopped at a smoke house along the way and picked up some Texas tenderloin steak and red pepper jelly!

Arrived at McKinney Falls SP on the southeastern side of Austin – very quiet and seemingly woodsy for being so close to an urban area. The park has a good-sized stream running through it with two water falls and a couple of swimming holes.

After a quick setup, in much less humid conditions and no mosquitos, we took a walk to the upper falls. Man, it felt hot at 35 degrees Celsius. Luckily there are lots of trees and the pathway down to the falls was mostly shaded. Not a lot of water going over the falls but enough to make it interesting and provide a nice flow to make the swimming OK. I noticed there were a bunch of turtles in the water, but they didn’t seem to mind the people. We hadn’t put on our swimsuits so we ended up dangling our feet in the water before it goes over the falls.

Afterwards we drove to a nearby neighbourhood grocery store to pick up provisions then returned to enjoy our mosquito free campsite.
