Moving day! Our destination, central Kentucky at Nolin Lake State Park. Our
neighbours at Natural Bridge said Nolin Lake SP is their favourite campsite in
Kentucky, so our expectations were high. En route, to break up the drive, we stopped
at Pleasant Hill, home to what was once a Shaker community. It is now a very
well kept historic location that provides a glimpse into Shaker life back in the
1800s. They were very religious, strict and mostly celibate with some quirky ideas
on how people are supposed to live. Their sect eventually fizzled out in the
early 1900s. While they were around, they proved to be quite innovative and
industrious for their time and implemented such things as an excellent freshwater
system for their community, a broom factory and some wooden furniture manufacturing.
The small village had attractive well-built homes and farm structures. Their
ideology embraced a commune lifestyle, though not like the 60s … these guys would
not have been into the Grateful Dead.
Our next pit stop was Bardstown, the bourbon capital of Kentucky. No bourbon
for us, just coffee and groceries and gas at a massive Kroger store (three aisles
of chips).
We arrived at Nolan Lake SP, checked in and found our site – lovely. Very
peaceful with the campsites well spaced and very well kept. We decided to setup
our awning as rain was predicted overnight. Settled in for a relaxing evening.
