Wednesday May 8th
One of the neighbouring towns, Abita Springs, is a short drive from the
campground and has a trailhead for the Tammany Trace Bike Trail, another of the
many rail trails we’ve discovered on this trip. It was already 28 C and heading
for 32 C, so we decided to get our run in early. It was very humid but the
trail was well shaded, so we weren’t getting pounded by the sun. We ran 8 km
out and back, saw a number of cyclists but no other runners.
After the run we headed back to camp for showers and headed off to another
nearby town called Covington. It’s known for being artsy and there is a farmers’
market on Wednesdays. Once there we had a difficult time finding parking, very
busy area without much public parking. We walked around town, found the market
but there were only a few stalls operating…too hot maybe? We hit a local coffee
shop, which for me turned out to be disappointing. At some previous coffee shops,
I had enjoyed a mushroom based drink called Chaga Chai Latte. At this shop they
had something similar, or so I thought, but no, it was awful. I also ordered a
muffin which had been in the freezer, warmed in the microwave, and then served
to me still half frozen! I did get my money back on the muffin at least.
We moved on from Covington and headed to a Cajun food shop called Bergeron’s
Boudin and Cajun Meats. We picked up some Boudin balls and Crawfish pie for
supper!
A few other shopping stops were made then we headed back to camp. With the
temperature at 33 C, we found a bit of shade and hydrated ourselves for the
rest of the afternoon. As the sun went down it cooled off and we enjoyed our Cajun
meal at the picnic table. Our neighbour at the campground brought us over a Cajun
tomato which we sliced up and enjoyed with the rest of our Cajun meal.
