Friday May 3rd

Unsettled weather today with the forecast looking similar tomorrow. It was too wet for walking in the woods, so after breakfast we went over to the golf course that is part of the state park. There are six state owned golf courses in Tennessee, so this was our chance to give one a try. Although the weather looked a iffy, we booked a 10 am tee time for Saturday morning. There was a practice range, so we planned to arrive early to shake off the winter rust…if that is even possible!

We debated on how to spend the rest of the day and decided to stick close to home and go for a run on park roads, which are extensive. Once we got going, it was very hilly, so the run was a challenge with over 500 feet of elevation change. There is lodge and conference center in the park, so we ran to it and back – 9 km. It was a tough run but we both felt good afterwards! The rest of the afternoon we spent hanging around camp with the idea of an early supper as we had a concert booked for the evening.

Our show was in the town of Franklin featuring T-Bone Burnett which we booked from home when we were researching the area. We had been watching a TV series called “True Detective” and T-Bone Burnett composed the music for the series. Franklin is a small town south of Nashville and is close enough to be a suburb. Although larger than Niagara-on-the-lake, it has that same artsy feel about it with a quaint main street and lots of nice homes in the surrounding neighbourhoods. The venue, Franklin Theater, is a renovated movie house that was resurrected a few years ago. There are just over 300 seats, so not a bad one in the house. There was also cabaret seating in front of the stage – our seats were a bit further back but like I said, no bad seats.

The show got underway, and T-Bone was accompanied by none other than Colin Linden (Canadian) and a guy on double bass. Colin Linden has collaborated with T-Bone and produced his most recent album – which they played in its entirety for the first set. The second set featured his older material and some covers – all in all a very enjoyable show.

After the show, we made our way back to camp – about a 50 minute drive. We enjoyed a nice cuppa tea back in Free-da, then hit the sack.
