Tuesday May 14th
We started our final day in Galveston with a run on the beach. Less humid
today, but still very sweaty. After our showers, we headed into town for our 12-noon
yoga class. Before going to the studio, we checked out a spice store and picked
up some Texas steak spice… I guess we’re not hot enough.
We arrived at Island Salt Air Yoga and met our instructor, Sarah. There was
one other participant in the class, so we had lots of room to move. The class
was 30 minutes core and 30 minutes stretching – great class. We hung out and
chatted with Sarah and Randall and then it was time to head out for coffee
again at Mod.
While looking for things to do and see in Galveston, Lydia noticed the Naval
Museum, which has two WWII ships on display. We decided to check it out and
were not disappointed. On display were the submarine USS Cavalla (over 300’
long) and USS Stewart, Destroyer Escort. We were able to do self guided tours
through both vessels and really were able to appreciate how rough and cramped
those quarters were and how claustrophobic it must have been to be out at sea
for months at a time not knowing if you’d ever make it back to port safely. The
other thing that struck me was the technology of the day, especially in the
sub. So many valves and levers, gages and systems that were so tightly crammed
in, it would have been a nightmare to try and maintain or repair any of it.
Hats off to those that served, so difficult and life changing.
After the museum, we headed back to camp and were forced inside by all the
mosquitos. We attempted a walk to the trash bin to drop off a garbage bag and
were just about eaten alive! Yikes! We hope our next stop is mosquito free.
