 Saturday May 11th

We only had one full day in the Lafayette area and it was a good looking one. After breakfast we headed to McGee Swamp Tours to rent a canoe and paddle a bayou. The bayou we chose was called Atchafalaya, located 30 km east of Lafayette, LA. It is not a wilderness area by any stretch with lots of fishermen (fishing very popular around here) and boats in general. However, it was interesting paddling through a cypress swamp, with Spanish Moss laden trees. The canoe was a bit clunky, designed for beginner paddlers and very wide across the middle. They also supplied us with kayak paddles, which worked but were not as efficient as canoe paddles. I think the kayak paddles are easier for beginners. We spent a couple of hours paddling a nice circuit through the trees, we were startled a couple of times by fish jumping right beside the canoe, but we didn’t see any gators and not a lot of birds.

After the paddle we met a young German woman who was travelling for 4 weeks in the south and east US. She was camping solo in a tent and said it was sometimes hard to find a campsite that would let her pitch her tent. A lot of the private campgrounds are RV only it seems. Luckily the state campgrounds are open to all types of camping.

We returned to our campground, did a wash and spent the rest of the afternoon at the lovely campground pool. The air temperature was very warm, so a swim at the pool was refreshing and relaxing. There was only one other family at the pool, so we more or less had it to ourselves.

Later on, Lydia whipped up a batch of delicious, healthy cookies for us to enjoy.
