Thursday April 25
Today is Lydia and my 30th anniversary together! Tonight we will
be celebrating in Kentucky at Natural Bridge State Resort Park – sounds fancy.
First, a longish drive from Watoga SP to our destination. We wanted to break up
the drive, so we planned a few stops. Our first stop was at New River Gorge in
WV, a popular multisport destination with everything from hiking, rock climbing,
kayaking to name a few. We opted for a popular gorge rim hike called “Endless
Wall”. We decided to do the out and back option as we had limited time to spend
hiking. The views of the gorge were fantastic with the river flowing some 500
meters below our feet. Fun fact; there are over 1500 rock climbing routes in
the gorge area.
After the hike our next stop was Charleston, the state capital of WV. We
decided to make it a pit stop more out of curiosity than anything else. We both
thought it would be quite a busy city and were a little concerned where we
would park Fripp and Free-da (can be a challenge sometimes). Charleston sort of
snuck up on us and before we knew it we were downtown along the waterfront
along the Kanawha River. There was ample street parking very close to where we
had targeted so we took a quick stroll along the riverfront and through the
historic downtown core. We couldn’t get over how deserted the place was – a bit
creepy. Anyway, a short walk was enough and we got out of town.
Next stop was Huntingdon, a town just before the Kentucky border where we
stopped to pick up groceries. Finally at 7:30pm we arrived at Natural Bridge SP
and found our site. The campsite is quite compact with approximately 35 sites
for RVs. We were expecting a full house but it was only ½ full – with, as we
found out, lots more to come on the weekend.
